Five Things That Really, Totally, Honestly Helped My Skin (and me!)

Hello! This is Shawn again. I just wanted to share some of the things that have truly helped me. And if you have any tips that have helped you, please share! We are here to support each other in this funny, strange, cool adventure called life.

1. Never Go To Bed With A Dirty Face

You know how they say never go to bed angry? Let me add “don’t go to bed angry and always wash your face“. I know, I know. I got home really late and slightly inebriated last night too, and it was so tempting to just fall into my pillow without washing my face (or taking out my contact lenses but that’s another story). But think about it. All during the day your face is accumulating bacteria, sunscreen, moisturizers, make-up, junk flying around in the air, dead skin cells and God knows what else. Do you really want all that seeping deep into your pores all night, creating even more pimples and clogging the pores? NO! Always clean your face! And for those emergency situations, keep cleansing wipes right next to your bed so you never have an excuse for going to sleep with a dirty face.

2. Be Gentle With Your Skin

Sometimes I am so frustrated I just want to scrub those zits right off. Forget the scrub! Please give me sand paper Baby! But remember, being harsh is just going to inflame your skin and aggravate the situation further. Picking and scratching and scrubbing and squeezing really does make things worse. Exfoliation with Acids has worked so much better for me than mechanical exfoliation. AHA’s like Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid and BHA’s like Salicylic Acid are far less irritating to my skin and clean it out much better in the deeper layers.

3. Drink Water and Have a Balanced Diet

There is some discussion about exactly how much water we need. A 2010 report in the Journal of Clinical Dermatology concluded: “How-to books, beauty journals, the Internet, and the media usually recommend drinking six to eight glasses of water each day for keeping the skin hydrated, helping it look healthier, and making it less prone to wrinkles. We have found no scientific proof for this recommendation.”

But consider that our bodies are made up of 55 – 60% water, including our skin, which is the largest organ. We need water to carry nutrients to our cells, cleanse our body of toxins, and keep our organs functioning properly. You can die within days without hydration. And I just feel better when I drink a lot of fresh, clean, pure water! It keeps me from drinking other unhealthy, sugary and chemical-filled beverages.

We don’t want to talk about the diet and healthy food today. Sunday is my cheat day too! But there is increasing scientific evidence that supports the relationship between acne (vulgaris) and diet. I know, it’s really hard to be disciplined and eat a lot of veggies every day. I do my best. Swear! I love my cheat days and I don’t get nuts if I eat a pizza or a donut. Life is all about checks and balances 😉

4. Stay Active

Exercise is important for so many reasons. It increases your blood flow, which carries oxygen and nutrients to your skin, and carries waste and free radicals away. I think in terms of cleaning my skin on the outside with external cleaners, and from the inside with exercise.

It also helps to reduce stress, and we all know the effects of stress hormones on our skin. Stress can affect your androgen and cortisol levels which can lead to more sebum production and more nasty pimples. So get moving Baby! Get that blood pumping and those endorphins working! Just wash your face after your workout… always!

5. Be Kind

Why can’t we be as kind to ourselves as we are to others? Why do we look in the mirror, see a spot and consider ourselves unworthy of love? I can’t tell you how many days I have spent in self-loathing, sometimes staying home playing sick because I was ashamed of my face. I’m tired of it! I don’t want to lose out on one single life experience simply because I feel less pretty and less cool than other people. Look in the mirror every single day and tell yourself what an incredible, wonderful miracle you are, full of potential! Because you really are. Go and conquer the World.

Let’s show some true love Babes!
